Rockin’ out in Van

Many of our students are actually unaware of the great live music scene here in Vancouver. Music has been an instrumental (pardon the pun) part of Vancouver’s entertainment and culture scene. Today I’m going to tell you about a couple of great music venues and some even better bands, singers, or artists coming to Van in the coming months.

The Commodore

Situated right in the heart of the Granville Strip is The Commodore Ballroom, or as it is more affectionately known as “The Commodore”. Opening in 1929 as a glamorous art deco ballroom, the Commodore has had a wild and varied life as a blues club, a punk paradise, a swing dance hall and, of more recent times, the best venue in Vancouver for all genres of modern music from Pop, Rock, Hip-hop, and Dance.

A few great shows coming to the Commodore in the next few months include:

  • Reel Big Fish – Orange County ska punk pranksters on Jan.16th, 2019
  • MØ – Danish Pop/Dance Superstar on Jan.30th, 2019

The Vogue Theatre

A short stroll from the Commodore is The Vogue Theatre which was built as a movie theatre in 1949 and transformed into a concert venue in 1992. Today it plays host to touring Rock and Punk bands and touring comedians.

A few great shows coming to the Vogue in the next few months include:

  • Dan Mangan – local Vancouver singer-songwriter on Feb. 12th
  • Jungle – an English modern soulmusical collective on March 9th

The Imperial

Originally built as a Chinese authentic Kung-Fu movie theatre called the Golden Harvest in the early 1970s, the Imperial has become one of Vancouver’s premium concert or event halls. This amazingly renovated venue has a great mix of classic Chinese design with miniature replicas of the Qin Dynasty’s terracotta soldiers lining the walls and modern stylish leather booth seats in the back.

A few great shows coming to the Imperial in the next few months include:

  • South African/American Alternative Rock band Kongos on Jan.13th
  • Ria Mae, Canadian singer-songwriter, on Feb.18th
